Annual PS 154 Spring Carnival

The Spring Carnival committee plans for this huge event all year! The carnival is one of the largest fundraisers for the PTA and it's a great event drawing kids and families from the school and the neighborhood. Local businesses support the carnival by sponsoring booths and donating supplies and student and parent volunteers are the key to making the day a huge success every year. This year's carnival will feature a bouncy castle, an obstacle course, pony rides, live music, great food and crafts galore. And don't forget, it's your one and only opportunity to dump Principal Ortiz into the dunk tank.

Movie Nights

Throughout the winter months, the PTA sponsors family movie nights at the school. While showing shorts on the big screen, pizza, hotdogs, snacks and beverages are sold. Feature films shown include "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "E.T.", and "Yellow Submarine". A fun Friday night is had by all.

Art Craft Fair

Taking place in the spring, usually the Saturday before Mother's Day, the Art Craft Fair is an outdoor event where local artists share their talents and display their art and crafts against the beautiful backdrop of Prospect Park. There are typically around 50 vendors who display everything handmade, from painting to knitting, pottery to jewelry and from t-shirts to hats.

International Food Festival

This event in early September brings our community together for another school year by celebrating our cultures through food. Many families contribute dishes from all over the world to be sold in the school yard and enjoyed by everyone.

PS 154 Chess Tournament

Open to all students in grades K-5, this annual tournament allows the children to experience competitive chess in the safety of their own school. Players are grouped into 3 categories: K, 1, and 2-5 grades. The top 4 players in each category gets a trophy, and all players get a medal. Pairings within each category are made using a method called the Swiss System, which matches players who have the same number of points at each round. Your opponents get tougher if you win, easier if you lose.

Winter Fair

The Winter Fair takes place in early December during the holiday season with entertainment and activities for all ages. While the children will enjoy a variety of activities like student performances, music, and craft making, parents can paruse the offerings of the silent auction. Every year each class makes a group project to be auctioned off and local vendors and even teachers donate goods and services. Holiday foods and festivities are provided throughout the day. It is a full day of fun for the whole family.

Boo Bash

The Boo Bash is a Halloween festival, parade and dance-a-thon generally scheduled at the school on a Friday evening prior to Halloween. The Boo Bash kicks off with a parade of children masquerading in costumes and marching outside around the school, followed by fun Halloween activities, craft making, dinner and treats and culminating in a wild D.J. rock'n dance-a-thon.

Poetry Extravaganza

Every year, as part of our school wide poetry study in reading and writing, and as part of the National Poetry Month celebration, every student at PS 154 contributes to Poetry Extravaganza, our school wide poetry magazine. Sponsored by the PTA, supported by teachers, staff, and families, this compilation of student work is truly an expression of the creative spirit of a whole community. And so, appropriately, its publication is customarily celebrated as a community in the classrooms during the Parents as Enrichment Partners in June. One of the wonders of this magazine is that, by putting the work of all grades between two covers, the reader gets to see the impressive range of writing and editing skills our children develop as they move up the grades from year to year. At PS 154, our children learn to attempt words, new sentence structures, and new writing strategies. In this magazine one can see how the willingness to take risks and sometimes make mistakes begins to pay off in the ways the student writing as a whole gradually develops and matures. Finally, as an open forum for the real work that goes on in our classrooms, Poetry Extravaganza is a testament to the belief that the work of ALL students is valuable, that our curriculum is not just about 3's and 4's, and that this commitment to valuing all work makes PS 154 a safe place for all our students to take risks, grow and learn.
